Brit Milah

Mazel Tov! You’ve had a baby boy!
According to Jewish tradition, the Brit Milah (circumcision) you perform for your son makes you, the parents, partners with God in the act of repairing the world and completing the human body—an extension of your partnership with Him in the miracle of creation. As the Midrash says: “There are three partners in a person – God, his father, and his mother” (Talmud Bavli, Kiddushin 30b).

During the first week after birth, you are likely focused on recovering from the pregnancy and delivery, and caring for your newborn. Amidst the excitement and exhaustion, you are also invited to prepare for the Brit Milah—the sacred covenant between the Creator and your son, held on the eighth day after birth. Though the Brit Milah is a medical-surgical procedure, it is also a deeply joyful occasion that celebrates the child’s entrance into the Jewish community.

Naturally, this event comes with excitement and perhaps concern for your baby’s well-being. Choosing experienced professionals and becoming familiar with the ceremony and its meaning will help you wholeheartedly celebrate your son’s entry into the covenant of Abraham.
Rabbi Mordechai Attias is here to guide you through the planning of the Brit Milah and help make the ceremony feel familiar and accessible. The structure and customs of the ceremony are explained in detail so that you can create a meaningful experience, make informed decisions, and enjoy a rich, warm connection to Jewish tradition.
